Aims: To study hypertension status and its nutritional risk factors on 1170 adults from 40 to 69 years old in Nghi Thinh and Nghi Thai communes, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted and general information, blood pressure, anthropometry and semi-quantitative food consumption frequency data were collected using suitable methods and assessment thresholds.

Results: The global prevalence of hypertension was 39.7%, of which 52.8%, 44.2%, and 21.6% for the 60-69, 50-59, and 40-49 year-old people, respectively. The prevalence of hypertension in men was 53.4%, higher than that of women (35.3%). The prevalence of overweight and obesity or abdominal obesity is higher in hypertension group compared with the other. The average standard units of fruit eaten was 1.7 in non-hypertension group and 1.6 in the hypertension group (p<0.05). The frequency of animal organs and instant noodles intake was also a risk factor of the hypertension status.

Conclusions: The prevalence of subjects with hypertension was still high. It increased with age and was higher in men than in women. Body mass index, abdominal obesity, number of fruit intake a day and the frequency of animal organs and instant noodles intake were the nutritional risk factors to the hypertension status.
